Maria Fernanda Rodrigues

Secretary of State for Housing, Professor Maria Fernanda Rodrigues

Maria Fernanda Rodrigues was born in 1962 in Águeda. She has a degree in Civil Engineering from the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra, in 1985; a Master's degree in Human Engineering from the University of Minho, in 1999, and a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Aveiro, in 2008. Lecturer in the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Aveiro since October 1, 2001. Director of the Integrated Master's Degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Aveiro since 2017 and since 2021 she has been the director of the Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering and the Master's Degree in Civil Engineering. As part of her PhD, she worked on the State of Conservation of Cost-Controlled Housing Buildings. Evaluation index and methodology for obtaining it.

Professor Luís Simões da Silva

Modular construction: is it the solution for the societal challenges of the construction sector? 

Luis Simões da Silva graduated in Civil Engineering at the University of Coimbra in 1984, received an MSc in "Structural Steel Design" with Distinction at Imperial College London in 1986 and a PhD in “Structural Mechanics” also at Imperial College London in 1989. He received the title of Docteur Honoris Causa from the University of Liege, Belgium, in 2018. He is Vice-Rector of the University of Coimbra and Professor of Steel Construction at the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Coimbra. Head of Department of Civil Engineering (2001-2003; 2005-2007; 2013-2015). Director/Co-Director of ISISE – Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering (2008-2023), Research Centre financed by FCT (Portuguese Science Foundation). President of cmm (Portuguese Steelwork Association). Member of the Portuguese Academy of Engineering. Chair of the Technical Management Board of ECCS (2007-2013) and President of ECCS (2011-2013). Involved in large number of Technical and Scientific Committees in the field of Steel Construction. Author of 700+ scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and conferences. Large involvement in internationally-funded R&D

Long-life, Loose Fit: A forward-looking retrospective

Stephen Barrett  is Partner at RSHP and has over 30 years of experience with the practice. He leads the French and French-speaking teams and projects within RSHP. He was project architect for: Bordeaux Law Courts; Terminal T4 at Barajas airport in Madrid; the Palmas Altas eco-campus in Seville; the control tower at Heathrow airport in London, the Terminal 1 of Lyon-Saint Exupéry airport and, more recently, the East Wing extension at Geneva airport. In addition to more than a dozen airport projects, Stephen has managed the multidisciplinary teams of urban and strategic projects for Grand Paris (2008-2012), Bercy Charenton (2009-19), Gare de Lyon Daumesnil, (2014 -), Roads of the Future Grand Paris, and latterly, the Montparnasse Masterplan. He leads RSHP’s Sustainable Development group and recently managed the audit of the practice’s carbon footprint.

 

Stuart SmithEng. Stuart Smith

Forging a Sustainable Future: Steel's Evolution in Circular Economy, Modular, and Off-Site Construction

Stuart Smith leads the structural design team at Arup in Germany. He is an expert in innovation and sustainability in structural design. He set up a series of research projects - including the development of prototypes - exploring open-source design, digital fabrication and material cycles. Stuart Smith has been involved in renowned projects such as the Tate Modern Gallery in London, the CCTV Tower in Beijing and the Reforma 509, a 240-metre tall building in the highly seismic Mexico City. In addition, he has worked with prominent artists such as Doris Salcedo for the installation "Shibboleth" at the Tate Modern and Ai Wei Wei for the Serpentine Pavilion 2012. Stuart Smith studied civil engineering at City University and Imperial College in London and went on to work for Arup London for almost 20 years before moving to the Berlin office and taking on the structural team leadership.

Professor László Dunai

Steel design assisted by FE analysis – new developments in Eurocode 3

László Dunai is Graduated Civil Engineering at the Technical University of Budapest in 1983 and Engineering Mathematics in 1986. PhD title was obtained in 1996 and in 2002 he acquired the habilitation. In 2008 he got the Doctor of Sciences degree, in 2016 he was elected as the Corresponding Member and in 2022 as the Full Member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He participated in postdoctoral study programs in Lehigh University (USA) and in Osaka University (Japan). He is now professor at the Civil Engineering Faculty and head of the Structural Engineering Department, Budapest University of Technology and Economics. His key areas of research cover the following subjects: steel and steel-concrete composite structures; thin-walled structural systems; stability and fatigue of bridges; numerical modeling, finite element analysis and design of structures; on these fields he supervised 17 PhD thesis. He participates actively in editorial boards of international journals, in the development of the new generation of steel structural Eurocodes and in conference organizing and scientific committees.

 

Jean Francois DemonceauProfessor Jean-François Demonceau

Robustness of steel and steel-concrete composite structures – From research to practice

Jean-François Demonceau is Associate Professor at Liege University, and his main research field is related to the resistance and stability of steel and composite structures with a special attention paid to the robustness such structures when subjected to accidental/exceptional events. For around 20 years, he participated to numerous national and international projects, including 17 RFCS projects, and publishing in various international journals. He is also strongly involved in international scientific networks and in normative European committees.

 

 

José Miguel CastroProfessor José Miguel Castro

Steel-concrete composite structures in the context of the new generation of Eurocodes

José Miguel Castro is an Associate Professor at the Civil Engineering Department of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto. He graduated in civil engineering from the University of Porto in 1994 and concluded an MSc in Structural Steel Design at Imperial College London in 2000. In 2006 he was awarded a PhD in civil engineering from Imperial College London. Miguel is an expert in steel and composite structures subjected to extreme loading conditions such as earthquakes and he has been actively involved in the coordination of several national and European research projects. He is a full member of Technical Committee 13 on Seismic Design of the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork (ECCS) and is also a member of CEN/TEC250/WG2 that is working towards the development of the new version of Eurocode 8, the European seismic code. Currently, he is also the president of CT 115/SC4, the national mirror subcommittee of CEN/TC250/SC4. His current research interests are on the development of novel seismic design methodologies for steel and composite structures as well as on the collapse and seismic risk assessment of existing steel buildings. He is co-author of more than 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters and international conference proceedings and is a reviewer of several scientific journals in the fields of earthquake engineering and steel structures.

 

Markus KnoblochProfessor Markus Knobloch

Research and Assessment of Steel and Composite Structures – Advances and Future Challenges

Markus Knobloch joined the Ruhr-Universität Bochum in 2014 and holds the Chair of Steel, Lightweight and Composite Structures. Previously, he received his PhD in Structural Engineering from ETH Zürich in 2007 and was a visiting researcher at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan and the Queensland University of Technology, Australia. He continued his carrier as a project leader with Tuchschmid AG, a steel construction company in Frauenfeld, Switzerland. In 2011, he was appointed Professor at University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland and worked as a co-expert at Gruner AG, Basel. He is also the owner of a consulting office in Switzerland. As a member in numerous expert committees, he is actively involved in European standardization work, and serves as CEN/TC250/SC3 Chair since 2022. His research includes studies on structural stability, structural durability and fatigue, and structural hazard performance.

 

Stefana ParaschoProfessor Stefana Parascho

From Automation to Collaboration

Stefana Parascho is a researcher, architect, and educator whose work lies at the intersection of architecture, digital fabrication and computational design. She is currently an Assistant Professor at EPFL where she founded the Lab for Creative Computation (CRCL). Through her research, she has explored multi-agent fabrication methods, and their relationship to architecture. Her current research focuses on human-robot collaborative processes and the relationship between robotic construction and the built environment. Her goal is to strengthen the interdisciplinary nature of the field by increasing accessibility of digital tools and connecting technical research with societal aspects. Before joining EPFL, Stefana was an Assistant Professor at Princeton University, where she led the CREATE Lab Princeton. She completed her doctorate in 2019 at ETH Zurich, Gramazio Kohler Research. Previously, she received her Diploma in Architectural Engineering from the University of Stuttgart and worked with DesignToProduction Stuttgart and Knippers Helbig Advanced Engineering.

CE Marking of Steel Structures - A national industry point of view

Marco António Oliveira Henriques was born in Brazil in 1971. He graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra in 1993; Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra in 2019. Currently Director of Operations in the Middle East and General Manager of the Martifer Group's subsidiary in Saudi Arabia, he has been involved since 2011, as head of Quality at Martifer Construções Metalomecânicas, in the developments related to the implementation of the harmonized standard for steel structures in Portugal, and is also a member of the technical committees TC9 - CE Marking of Steel Structures (sectoral working group of the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork), CT 182 (Execution of steel constructions, IPQ) and TC 135/WG2 (Technical requirements for the execution of steel structures, CEN).

The importance of standardization in steel and composite construction

Maria João Graça is a member of the Board of Directors of the Portuguese Quality Institute, and was Director of the IPQ's Standardization Department between 2014 and 2023; she is the national Head of Delegation at the General Assemblies of the European and International Standardization Committees; she is a national member of the Committee on Standards, the European Commission's discussion forum for European mandates; she is a national member of the High Level Forum, a strategic decision-making forum within the scope of the European Commission's European Regulation on Standardization; Medal of Merit awarded by the Portuguese Association of Business Ethics in 2023; Ambassador of the SDG Alliance Portugal of the United Nations Global Compact Network Portugal, for SDG 16 - Peace, Justice and Effective Institutions since 2017; she was administrator, representing the Public Administration, at the Technological Centre for Ceramics and Glass, between 2015 and 2019.

Modular construction – A new future

Nuno Neves was born in 1976 in Porto. He has a degree in civil engineering from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (1999), in the structures option. He has a master's degree in structures (2003) from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto and an MBA from the Catholic University of Porto (2010). With 23 years of professional experience, he has developed structural design activities since 1999 at the company AFACONSULT with coordination and project management roles since 2007, having participated in structural projects such as the Convent of S. Francisco in Coimbra or the Bridge Pedro- Inês in Coimbra. In 2010 he joined the DST group, at the company bysteel where he led the project department. Having participated in projects such as Lyon Airport, Schiphol Airport or the Longchamps Racecourse in Paris. As of 2022 he is a member of the management board of the company bysteel, being responible for the technical department, and performs technical coordination functions in the industrialization project | modular construction in the DST group.

 

 

David AndradeProfessor David Andrade

Additive Manufacturing in Steel and Composite Construction: Opportunities and Challenges

David Andrade received a MSc in Mechanical Engineering in 2016 and, in 2021, was awarded a PhD in Steel and Composite Construction at the University of Coimbra with Distinction and Cum Laude. He is currently working as a Researcher at the University of Coimbra, and he is an integrated member of ISISE (Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering), where he coordinates the Digitalization and Advanced Design Cluster. He is also an Invited Assistant Professor at the University of Coimbra. The research interests cover various topics related to the mechanical and microstructural characterisation of metallic materials, numerical modelling, welding, additive manufacturing, auxetic structures and modular construction. He has proven himself as a motivated researcher as he has published in several peer-reviewed international journals and participated in several International Conferences in his research field.

Additive Manufacturing Overview and Trends: What's on the Horizon for 3D Printing?

Artur Mateus holds a PhD from the University of Reading (UK) in the physics department. He holds a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon (IST-UL). He has a degree in Mechanical Engineering, from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra. He is an Adjunct Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department of the School of Technology and Management (ESTG) of the Polytechnic of Leiria (PLeiria), carrying out research and teaching in the areas of advanced production technologies, Additive Manufacturing, Computer Aided Engineering, Virtual Prototyping and Computational Modelling and Simulation, Augmented Reality, Rapid Tool Manufacturing and Product Design and Development. He is the co-editor of 11 books, author or co-author of more than 100 articles in international magazines, national magazines, book chapters, book articles and conference proceedings and co-author of 17 patents and 2 industrial models. He is director of the Centre for Rapid and Sustainable Product Development (CDRSP), at PLeiria. He has been a member of the technological and advisory board of the business incubator - Association for Specific Business Opportunities (OPEN), since September 2016. Over the last fourteen years, he has collaborated in the implementation of around 230 national and international research projects mainly in direct digital manufacturing area.
